Get your Amex card details before the card arrives.

If you're impatient like me, you don't have to wait for the physical card to start using a new Amex. You can pull the details within minutes of approval by pushing the card into Google Pay through Amex's own site. It's especially handy for cards where the number doesn't show up right away, like BBT or a stashed app. This started as a Reddit post, and I've added a few details from doing it myself.

What you need first

• At least one other open Amex card on the same login, to verify your identity.
• The new card linked to your existing online account. You can do that over the phone, or sometimes through chat.
• No other Amex already in your Google Wallet with the same last four as the new card.
• Probably an Android phone. If you've pulled it off with Chrome alone, correct me.

Setting it up

1. Log in to your Amex account.
2. In the same tab, go to global.americanexpress.com/account-management/digital-wallets.
3. Pick a card from the dropdown that you already have the CVV for.
4. Authenticate. They usually ask for the three digits on the back.
5. Go back to the dropdown and pick the new card you don't have details for.
6. Choose Google Pay, then Amex Virtual Card.
7. Sign in to your Google account and approve it on your phone. You may be able to do this in Chrome instead.
8. It may or may not add the card to tap-to-pay on the phone. Either way, it stays usable in Chrome.
9. In Chrome, open the three-dot menu, go to Passwords and Autofill, then Payment Methods, and make sure "Save and fill payment methods" is toggled on.

Using it

Open any site in Chrome that asks for payment. Google Pay should pop up and ask which card to use, and you'll see your new card listed twice:

• The virtual card, which generates a card number, expiration date, and CVV.
• The actual card, which shows the card number and expiration date but no CVV.

The virtual card is the one you want whenever a site needs a CVV.
